NELSON-GLENHOPE RAILWAY
LAST SECTION OF TRACK LIFTED (New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, December 20. Today marked the completon of the demolition of the Nelson-Glenhope railway. At 10 o’clock this morning the last section of rails was lifted in the railway yards. There was no ceremony and the only indication that anything unusual was happening was the clicking of several cameras. It is now 13 months since the first work train left Nelson to begin lifting the rails over the 601 miles of track from Glenhope. Two previous attempts had been made to take the work train to Glenhope, but its progress was halted for fqur days by the presence of women rail-sitters, who made news throughout the world. Only after police action were the demonstrators removed and the demolition work permitted to proceed. Today the Nelson railway yards are crammed with piles of rails, three old locomotives, and other materials. All members of the department’s permanent staff in Nelson have been transferred to other districts. A bridge gang will return to Nelson on January 7 to dismantle five bridges near Glenhope and one across the Wai-iti river. The girders and timbers from these bridges will be used by the department elsewhere.
