AUSTRALIAN STOCK FIGURES
RECORD NUMBERS OF CATTLE
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE. December 20.
Australia’s cattle population reached a new peak of 16.450,000, in the year to March 31 last. The figure was disclosed yesterday in the annual report of the Australian Meat Board. Eeef cattle showed a further increase and the figure of 11,443.000 was the highest since this class of stock was recorded separately in 1943. Sheep and lamb numbers increased by Bm. head, reaching a new peak of 139 m. head. Pig numbers decreased by 130,000 (10 per cent.) which put them just above the average for the three years ended March 31, 1939. Australian meat production of all classes for the year ended June last was 1.219,000 tons, which represented an increase of 13.000 tons on the previous year and constituted a record. Production of beef and veal rose to 750,000 tons and increased in all States except Victoria. Mutton, lamb and pig meat production declined.
Exports of chilled, frozen and cured meats continued their upward trend, which began in 1953, while canned meat exports again fell. The total amount of meat consumed in Australia <excluding canned meat) was 2500 tons less than during 1954-55.
