LAWN TENNIS JUNIOR TOURNEY

SEMI FINALS PLAYED IN MOST GRADES HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY Semi-finals were reached in most grades yesterday, the second day of the sponsored junior tennis tournament. If yesterday’s standard of play was an indication, the finals today should provide some excellent games. Play was begun in the under 18 mixed doubles, and the plate competition in the under 18, 15 and 13 grades for boys and girls. This competition is for entrants who had been eliminated in the earlier games. There were several surprises in yesterday’s matches. W. Thom, playing one of his best matches so far this year, beat G. Moss, seeded fourth, in two sets, 6-4, 6-5. Thom’s shots were very powerful and he forced Moss into errors on several occasions.

L. Mardon and K. Brander, seeded first, were beaten 6-2, 6-3, by J. Mollison and K. Williams. Mollison served very well and Williams was able to win several points with good play at the net. Two under 13 grade players, L. Watkins and Miss J. McKenzie, played very capably in the under 18 mixed doubles. They were narrowly beaten 9-8, by two much older players, W. Thom and Miss H. Rich, in the second round. Watkins and Miss McKenzie will contest the finals of their singles grades today. The Nelson junior, R. W. Harris, had a hard struggle to beat A. Browne, of Ashburton, in the singles of the under 18 boys grade. The match went to three sets, Harris finally winning, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Harris is a very stylish player and some of his smashes, with which he scored frequently, were perfect. He appeared to have difficulty in getting away some of his opponent’s serves. Browne’s first serve was extremely fast and noticeably faster than his second. Results:— GIRLS MATCHES Under 18 Singles Quarter-finals. —L. Mardon beat J. Andrews. 6-2. 6-3; K. Williams beat H.
