A MAORI HANGI FOR A ROYAL GUEST.—The Duke of Edinburgh (left) watching the preparation of food for the picnic lunch on the racecourse at Waitangi during his informal visit to the Chatham Islands. He later had a hearty, meal of mutton and vegetables cooked in a Maori oven. At 4 o'clock in the morning a fire was lit in a pit lined with stones. When the stones were really hot, the fire was put out with water. The food was then placed in the pit and covered and the pit filled in with soil. By 1 o’clock in the afternoon the food was uncovered. It was well cooked and piping hot.
