BRITISH NATO FORCES
Sharp Reduction Expected
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 18. Britain has told the United States that it is considering cutting its troop contribution to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation rather sharply, the United Press reported today. Informed sources in Washington felt the move would be a logical means of easing Britain’s economic burdens in view of its current financial difficulties.
It was considered certain that the cut in British NATO forces was discussed between the United States Secretary of State (Mr Dulles) and the British Foreign Secretary (Mr Selwyn Lloyd) at the NATO meetings in Paris last week.
Mr Dulles was expected to be questioned at his press conference today about the extent of any British reduction in NATO contributions. A Washington official pointed out, however, that under the Western European Union Treaty, Britain had promised to keep troops in Western Europe. He doubted that Britain would cut these forces below a “meaningful” point.
