WORK SALE RAISES RECORD SUM
ACTIVITIES OF GROUP
With the buying of Christmas gifts in mind, women flocked to the annual sale of work of Mrs E. J. Cordner’s sewing bee, held yesterday at the home of Mrs H. E. W. Roberton, Papanui road.
The record sum of £225 was raised at the sale. From this amount donations will be made to the Diocesan Social Service Council for its home for the aged and towards the sponsorship of four children under the Save the Children Fund.
Goods on sale included baby towels, embroidered face flannels, pincushions, trousseau sets, workbags. knitted garments. babies’ garments and many original and useful articles designed as Christmas presents. For the last 30 years this group of women has met weekly to sew for an annual sale of work with the object of helping to raise funds for Church of England children’s homes. In that time they have raised about £5OOO at their sales.
At first proceeds from sales were sent to help support the church’s babies’ home at Sumner, but when this institution was closed the women turned their attention to St. Saviour’s Orphanage.
In the course of time, community needs have changed, and the sewing bee has extended its donations to include aged persons as well as children. A competition for an embroidered hussif. held as part of yesterday's sale, was won by Mrs M. B. Warren.
Fresh strawberry and cream sponges and apricot flans are the specials today for this week-end. at the Ethne Tosswill Cake Shop, 123 Cashel street. —Advt.
