MAGISTRATE’S COURT Eighteen Months’ Gaol For Indecent Assault

Richard Hill, aged 32. a miner (Mr L. G. Holder), appeared for sentence in the Magistrate's Court yesterday on four charges of indecent assault on males and females all under the age of 12 years. Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M., said this was a most distressing charge against a man of the age of accused. The crime was not an isolated act. It had been carried on for the best part of a year and had been perpetrated on very young children. Hill was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on each charge the last two to be cumulative, a total of 18 months. REMANDED A young man. who stole from a Christchurch firm, pleaded guilty and was remanded for one week for a Probation Officer's report and sentence. ON LICENSED PREMISES For being found illegally on the licensed premises of the Imperial Hotel after hours Andrew McDougal and Donald James Bowie were each fined £2. William Allan Purtle was fined £3. Gordon Ibbertson was fined £3 for being found on the licensed premises of the New City Hotel and Samuel Melhopt and George Keith Ayers were £ach fined £3 for being found after hours on the premises of the Prebbleton Hotel. FINED FOR THEFT Allan John Darling, aged 18, a military trainee appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing a spotlight valued at £ 3 the property of the Otago Machinery and Motor Trading Company, Ltd. In fining Darling £8 the Magistrate gaid accused was not a thief, nor was he going to become one. His theft was just a stupid prank but one that might lead to gaol or the Borstal. WARRANT FOR ARREST A warrant for the arrest of Stanley Harold Attewell, aged 39. a workman, was issued when Attewell failed to appear to answer a charge cf obtaining a radio valued at £25 from the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterburv. Ltd., by falsely representing that his name was H. Wild and that he was employed at the Ashley State Forest. Senios-Detective J. B. McLean, who applied for the warrant, said that police inquiries had shown that Attewell had no intention of appearing. He had also failed to appear on Wednesday. REMANDED FOR SENTENCE Neil Lonsdale Boldero. aged 17. a labourer, pleaded guilty to three charges of housebreaking and theft, one charge of attempted housebreaking,, and one of unlawfully converting a power-cycle. He was remanded to November 29 for a Probation Officer’s report and sentence. Bail was allowed in the sum of £lO, with one surety of £5O. Senior-Detective J. B. McLean said that on October 30, a house in Suffolk street had been entered while the occupants were away at work, and £7 stolen. The house was again broken into on November 12 and a £1 note and an American 10-dollar note taken. ORDER FOR POSSESSION The State Advances Corporation of New Zealand (Mr A. E. Jensen), proceeded against John O’Shain Soper, a cabinetmaker, and May Soper, his wife, for £2O 14s 3d mesne profits and

possession of a house at 53 Joy street. Judgment was given for the Corporation for £2O 14s 3d. An order was made for possession forthwith the warrant to lie in Court provided defendants pav the current mesne profits plus £1 a week off the arrears.

ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE

When Nell Ellen Lindoss, aged 39, a kitchen hand (Mr O. G. Clifford), was charged in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday with attempting to murder Niall Kaye Walker on October 7. Senior-Detective J. B. McLean said she was still ill and unable to appear. He asked that she be further remanded to December 6.

Mr Clifford said that the matter was still under consideration by the Attorney-General regarding a stay of proceedings. It was a very long remand but in the interests of the accused he felt he ought to consent. Mr Rex C. Abernethy, 5.M.,, further remanded Lindoss to December 6 by consent.
