JUVENILE DELINQUENCY

Sir, —Each day we read reports which incline us to the belief that juvenile delinquency is increasing, despite all the efforts of church and State to reduce it. What, then, is the cause? We must go back to the ancients to discover it. In Plato’s

“Republic” we read: “Not only for plants that grow in the earth, but for animals that live on it, there are seasons when mind and body are productive, seasons which come when a certain period is completed, of longer duration for the long-liver, shorter for the short-liver,” „ etc. He then gives a number and says: “This number, which thus measures and controls- the earth, is responsible for the quality of births,” etc. Scientists must seek this number and expound the law that quality is more important than quantity.—Yours, etc., M. G. DAVIES. Hanmer, ’November 22, 1956.
