Salvationists Go Out As Christ’s Disciples Went
(New Zealand. Press Association)
WELLINGTON. November 22
Three young members of the Salvation Army were sent from a meeting in the Wellington Citadel tonight without warning and with little money to preach the Gospel as Christ’s disciples preached it. They were told not to come back until Tuesday.
The men are First-Lieutenant Graeme Kearns. Cadet John Gainsford. and Cadet Ron Manning.
The cadets are students at the Salvation Army Training College. During a lecture, the principal of the college (Senior-Major John Moyce) discussed the occasion when Christ sent out his disciples two by two. He said he wondered what the reaction would be if preachers were sent out in that way now. Afterwards the two cadets, in conversation with First-Lieutenant Kearns, asked why preachers were not sent out in that way now Tonight, Wellington Salvationists gathered at the Vivian street Citadel
for their weekly meeting. The officer conducting the meeting that SeniorMajor Moyce would read the Gospel and make an unusual announcement. Major Moyce read from St. Mark vi. 7-12 (and He called unto Him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two). He then called the young officer and the two cadets forward. and told them that he was sending them out as Christ sent out His disciples. They would not go penniless. but with £1 each. They would not report back until Tuesday. The three were clearly taken aback, but walked out of the meeting.
