The “Wanganui Chronicle”

This week, a 36-page special edition printed by , the “Wanganui Chronicle to celebrate the newspaper s centenary. The paper began publication on September 16, 1856 as a weekly newspaper under the name of the Wanganui Chronicle ano Rangitikei Messenger.” It was not, however, the first newspapei to be published in Wanganui iolo ee years earlier ’ on November 16. 1853, a local resident, Francis H Watts, published the first issue of the “Wanganui Record” on one side venture failed, the “Wanganui of a half foolscap sheet. When that Chronicle’ was founded by Mi Henry Stokes in association with Messrs E. J. Jones and Charles Dawson.

The “Chronicle” progressed from a bi-weekly and a tri-weekly to a morning daily in 1871 and today it serves not only the city of Wanganui but many outlying country districts
