Mr and Mrs J. H. Butler, of Melbourne. will arrive in Christchurch by air today to stay with Mrs Butler’S sister, Mrs A. C. Purchas, of Andover street. Mrs Butler, who was Miss Shelagh Tobin before her marriage, has not visited Christchurch for 25 years. A meeting of women interested in the Country Women’s Institute movement was convened by Mrs Warner, and held in the Methodist church hall at Lyttelton on Tuesday afternoon. There was a good attendance. to whom Mrs M. Prebble, voluntary organiser, explained the objects of the movement, and briefly outlined its constitution. It was decided to form an institute and a committee was elected, with Mrs

Green as president. Mrs Ings as secretary and Mrs Gass as treasurer Other voluntary organisers who addressed the meeting were Mrs W. Patterson, president of the Canterbury federation, Mrs N. Candy and Mrs M. Morten. The garden circle of the Overseas League held its Christmas party yesterday afternoon at the league’s reception rooms. Mrs Ethel Winterbourn presided. Items were given by Mrs Scott (piano solos), Mrs J. Collins (songs). Mrs Fry (recitations) and Miss Beryl Gough (songs). Results of a competition for floral earrings were:—A class. Miss A. Ladd 1, Mrs C. Brown 2, Mrs D. Orchard 3: B class. Mrs A. Geddes 1, Mrs L. Denny 2, Miss N. Phillips 3. Mrs M. H. Godby, president or the Christchurch Ladies’ Golf Club since 1943, has retired from the position. At the annual meeting of the club recently. the club captain (Miss E. M. B. Nutt) presented her with a table lamn on behalf of members. Miss Nutt spoke of Mrs Godby’s ability as a player—she had been club champion— L and the excellent service she had given for many years as a committee member, club captain and presi* dent.

The final meeting for the year of the Mothers’ Union of Holy Trinity Church, Lyttelton, took : the form of an afternoon social. After: a service conducted by 4he vicar (the Rev. R. J. Witty) the guests,, who included members of sister branches, were welcomed by the president (Mrs Wells). Mrs Gough, of Darfield, gave a floral demonstration at the November meeting of the Oxford Garden Club which was presided over by Mrs M. Johnston. Competition results were: Decorative, A section: Mrs H. Knight, B section: Mrs Judson; spike: Mrs Latter; rose: Mrs Ivory; small bloonr Mrs F. Gorton; vegetable: Mrs Latter.

Mrs B. E. Henderson presided over an attendance of 50 members when the seventh birthday of the ShirleySt. Albans Garden Club was celebrated at Elizabeth House. The patron (Mrs J. K. Moloney) cut the birthday cake and flowers were presented to Mrs Henderson, Mrs Bust and Mrs Moloney. The making of a shoulder spray was demonstrated by Mrs K. Nicholls. Competitions resulted: Floral hat, A grade: Mrs H. M. Thomson 1, Mrs B. E. Henderson 2. Mesdames T. McMillan and T. Lock (equal) 3; B grade: Mrs J. Lowe 1. Mrs Malcolm Gray 2, Mrs A. J. Strong 3. Three roses: Mrs Tucker 1. Miss A. M. Watson 2. Mrs A. Le Brun 3. Lettuce: Mrs A. J. Strong 1. Miss Wilkie 2. Mrs G. Parr 3. The final meeting for the year of the Home Economics Association’s garden circle was held recently when Mrs G. J. Garton presided over a good attendance. Mrs K. D. Inwood was awarded most points in the annual rose and cut flower show and Miss L. Conway was second. The judge was Mr E. H. Barton. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs Garton in her recent bereavement. The Hoon Hay sub-committee of the Somerfield sub-branch of the Plunket Society recently held a successful break-up for the year. During the evening, a talk and demonstration on artificial respiration were given by Miss D. Brown and Mrs Piper of the Royal Life Saving Society. Prize winners were:—Lucky number: Mrs Clement; “Beetles”: Mrs Pitt. Two new members were welcomed at the monthly meeting of the Richmond Plunket Mothers’ Club. Mrs Harris presided and the guest speaker. Mrs Cecil Wood, gave an address on Sir Truby King. A “white elephant” stall raised £9 13s 6d. Mrs A. Thomson presided at the November meeting of the Beckenham Townswomen’s Guild. Circle reports were given by the leaders and a letter from the guild’s link at Telworth, England, was received. It recorded the visit of Mrs C. Ironside ,of Beckenham. The guild’s oldest member. Mrs Jennison, who celebrated her birthday during the month, was presented with a birthday cake. The choir, under the leadership of Mrs R. Allison, gave four numbers, Mesdames Allison. Travis and Grieve sang a trio and Mrs Grieve sang a solo. Mrs W. Grenfell and Mrs Jackson presented a sketch. The accompanist was Mrs C. Richards. Competition winners were: Mrs Hart 1. Mrs B. Hayes 2, Mrs Heywood 3.
