LACK OF PORT FACILITIES
PROBLEM FOR MEAT PRODUCERS
“One of the biggest problems which the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board has to face is the lack of harbour facilities for meat exports. The congestion in our harbours are costing producers thousands of pounds every year, and it is a big problem getting the harbours working, and getting transport running freely to the ports to clear produce.” said the president of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association (Mr T. P. Lowe) yesterday. Mr Lowe was addressing exhibitors in the Mid-Can-terbury competition in export lambs, which was held at the Fairfield freezing works.
Last season export meat production in New Zealand had increased bj r 28.000 tons, and in the last two years production had increased by 74,000 tons, said Mr Lowe.
Each annual increase was more than enough to provide work for an additional freezing works in New Zealand, he said.
