About 35 houses at the beach were permariently occupied, the majority by pensioners, said Mr Allard. It was a mile from his home to the main road and he was the nearest of the residents to it. At least 11 persons had no means of transport, and the remainder w’ho owned their own cars used them each day loi travel to work.

Perishable goods had to be brought to the beach store each week-end and the store depended upon Midland buses to do this.

The Railway road service was prepared to serve the main routes, but its desire to give its passengers from Kaikoura a fast, efficient service meant it could not go out of its way for a few passengers, said Mr E. Brittenden for the department “I’m sorry I can’t help the residents of the community but the company cannot be expected to run at a loss,” said the Authority. “I’m afraid the residents of Leithfield beach will have to come to an ar rangement among themselves and hire a rental car or bus when they need one. I don’t see how the company can be expected to run at a loss. When there is sufficient demand

—as there may be during the Christmas period—undoubtedly the service will exist.” Mr H. W. Hunter appeared tor the company. A new taxicab service licence authorising the operation of a taxi from Akaroa was granted Edwin John McNabb, of Percy street, Akaroa iMr J S. Haywood).
