TROTTING SUMMER MEETING AT ADDINGTON

Johnny Globe Favoured In Pacing Championship

CHANCE FOR RECRUIT IN FREE-FOR-ALL

Johnny Globe is selected to win his first race since last March in the £l7OO New Zealand Pacing Championship, one of the main races and the first leg of the double at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Addington tomorrow. If he can win, he will bring his number of wins in free-for-alls to 16, 10 more than the number won by Gold Bar.

Johnny Globe entered calculations for tomorrow’s race when he made an exhibition of his opponents in a two-mile free-for-all at Ashburton on Tuesday. With a minimum of effort he paced this distance in 4min 24sec, his last mile in 2min 4sec. It was a brilliant effort and showed that the Logan .Derby stallion was right back to his best. With luck in the running tomorrow, he should be the hardest to beat.

Johnny Globe had only one start at the Cup meeting, in the New Zealand Free-for-all on the last day. He was left three out without a trail over the last six furlongs and failed by half a length to catch Caduceus.

Johnny Globe will be making his fifth appearance in the Pacing Championship. He was third in 1951, fourth in 1953, third in 1954, and he won last year. There was no contest in 1952. So far Johnnv Globe has had 98 starts for 34 wins and 44 placings worth £42,802 10s in stakes. The winning stake tomorrow is worth £llO5, which would increase Johnny Globe’s total to £43,907 10s, almost £2OO more than that earned by Captain Sandy in New Zealand and Australia.

Most opposition to Johnny Globe is expected to come from J. D. Litten’s bracket of Caduceus, False Step, and Our Roger. The outstanding form of Caduceus and False Step at the cup meeting will probably result in the bracket being the actual favourite for the race. False Step is selected to do best of the three. A brilliant stayer, False Step is certain to appreciate the strong pace expected in tomorrow’s race. His three wins at Addington were all most decisive and although he will be meeting much stronger opposition tomorrow, he is expected to distinguish himself. Caduceus. third is the New Zealand Cup, second in the Ollivier Handicap, and a winner in his other two starts at the Cup meeting, is very fit at present and over the middle distance tomorrow. he is certain to be prominent. Our Roger was disappointing at the Cup meeting, but he is expected to be an improved horse now. He is usually most reliable.

Laureldale was twice placed in three starts at the cup meeting. He was a sound second to Thunder in the New Zealand Cup and was fourth in the New Zealand Free-for-all. The Josedale Grattan stallion is racing most generously at present and, if he has trained on satisfactorily, will have bright prospects of reaching a place.

Thelma Globe showed she was returning to her best when she finished fast along the inside for third to Caduceus and Johnny Globe in the New Zealand Free-for-all. The Springfield Globe mare is unlikely to do much more racing and a win for her. pithough it would be at good odds, would be well received. Tactician’s Prospects Tactician disappointed in the New Zealand Cup, his only start since he won the Hannon Memorial at Oamaru last month. That failure was nothing unusual for Tactician, a difficult horse to keep at his peak. He has had a chance to freshen up since then and ir will not surprise if he makes a bold showing. On his day he is one of the greatest pacers in commission. Brahman may do best of the other three starters, although he should be safely held by Johnny Globe, False Step? and Laureldale. In spite of his failure in the Greyhound Handicap on the final day of the cup meeting. Recruit is certain to be at short odds in the New Zealand Trotting Free-for-all, which should be an exciting race. Recruit won the Worthy Queen Handicap on the opening day of the Cup meeting, and finished a grand third in the Dominion Handicap. He has brilliant speed and stamina, and. if he does not lose too much ground early, should gc close to winning. Slipstream will be the hardest to beak He was runner-up to Vodka in this race last year. At the cup meeting he raced well from long handicap marks at his three starts, his fifth in the Greyhound Handicap being his best effort. Slipstream is the most leliable trotter in the race and he is certain to take part in the finish. Battle Cry trotted two fine races at the Cup meeting, his first starts for the season. He was a close sixth in the Dominion Handicap after giving away starts of up to 60 yards. That effort entitles him to be one of the favourites tomorrow.

Superfortress was a useful fourth in the Greyhound Handicap, and that effort suggested she was near her best. She is a grand type of trotter and should be prominent. The consistent Lady Baffelan, which is usually most reliable, will be set a difficult task here, but if she races up to her best she may be placed.

Precaution, which raced well from long marks at the Cup meeting, and Red Valley make most appeal of the others. Distant Star Favoured Distant Star is expected to extend his good record at the Cup meeting when he parades in the Smithson Handicap. The Sir Michael gelding had no luck in his racing on the first two days at Addington, but he came into his own in the Le Lievre Handicap on the final day. when he gained a narrow win in the two-mile Le Lievre Handicap. He had previously shown his best form over sprint and middle distances, and there was considerable merit in his win. He has raced most consistently in recent months, and from 12 yards should take catching tomorrow.

Stadium Chief, which will be bracketed with Rowan Star, is overdue for a win. The Dillon Hall gelding was placed in his three starts at the Cup meeting, and. with a little luck, would have been returned a winner at one appearance. He did not always begin smoothly, but if he does not lose too much ground in the first furlong, he should extend Distant Star.

Rowan Star's best effort at the meeting was a second, beaten a neck, to Caduceus in the Express Handicap on the second day. She has plenty of ability and could be prominent. Ricochet, a disappointment in the Metropolitan Challenge Stakes, should do better here. The Logan Derby four-year-old has more ability than most in the race and should be "placed. Mighty Fine, third in the Australasian Handicap. Scottish Brigade and Beau Marie are others expected to race well.

La Mignon, unplaced in her only start at the Cup meeting, impressed at the Ashburton trials on Tuesday, and she may win the Harold Logan Handicap. The Light Brigade mare is

an outstanding pacer and she must be near her best now. Lady Shona raced most consistently at the Cup meeting, and even from 36 yards must be respected. Lucky Hall raced well at the Cup’ meeting, and as he stays well he must be given more than an outside chance. He is a fit horse at present.

Banjo, which has raced well this season. Fervent Scott, and Young Sam make most appeal of the remainder.
