816 NEW ZEALANDERS APPLY (New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON. November 19. By noon today, 816 men had applied to join the New Zealand force tot ti«e Middle East. Of these applications. 450 were lodged in the Northern Military District. 221 in the Central Military District, and 145 in the Southex a Military District. The Army’s public relations officer (Major H. L. Heatley) said when announcing these figures that th.? ratio of the number of applications from the three districts for the Midib'e East was about the same as for New Zealand’s Special Air Service Squadron. Major Heatley could not say whether a date for the closing ut applications had been set.
