Olympic Village Street Names
Six streets in Melbourne’s Olympic village have been renamed for the Olympic Games period in honour of Australian Olympians and the spur: of Rugby. The streets had name.commemorating Australian feats dur ing the last world war and it had been suggested that these. might oe offensive to some of the visiting athletes.
The six streets with their new names are:
Alamein crescent to Flack street: E H. Flack was Australia’s first Olympic winner: he won the 80C metres and the 1500 metres at Athens in 1896.
Midway street to Durack street: Fanny Durack was the first Aus tralian woman to win an Olympic title, when she won the 100 metres free-style swim at Stockholm in 1912 Buna street to Beaurepaire street: Sir Frank Beaurepaire was one of the guiding hands behind Melbourne’s successful bid for the 1956 Olympic Games. He was an Olympic swimmer
Morobi street to Lane street: Frank Lane is the oldest Australian Olympian living. He won a 2UL metres free-style race in the Seine during the Paris Olympics of 1960 Barce parade to Rugby parade Rugby Union football was the first team sport in which Australia vvun a gold medal—at London, in 1908 Ramu parade to Elliot road: Ellin’ also won at the 1896 Games.
