It won by a good margin. Some boats were becalmed for considerable periods. The Varuna's time for the lu-mile journey was Ihr 40min, while some of the heavier boats took over four nours. Port Levy-Brighton Pier-Diamond Harbour race, over 20 miles, for the Studholme memorial cup. Once clear of the Port Levy heads, V ?st ,na set a course direct for the pier, while Tuscana stood further out to sea—a manoeuvre which proved very successful. At Taylor’s Mistake, she squared off towards the pier and set a spinnaker. On the leg back to Diamond Harbour, the wind lightened further. Tuscana crossed the line first, but lost too much time during the race to gain the handicap. Results were:— Haines Memorial Trophy—Varuna (I. Treleavan) 1, lolanthe (N. Arrow) 2, Murare (W. H. Browne) 3. Studhlome Memorial Cup.—Murare 1 Fantasy (E. P. Wills) 2, Tainui (H. Rudkin) and Windswift (A. France), equal, 3.
