WAVES HAMPER ROWERS

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 19. All rowers' at Ballarat are deeply concerned because rough weather has prevented them from reaching top condition. Unless the wind drops it is possible that the programme will not be held as scheduled. Yesterday a strong south-wester blew straight down the course and crews had the utmost difficulty in preventing their boats from being flooded. Three crews are favourites for the eights—Australia, America, . and Canada. The times they . have recorded during trials indicate that there would not be more than a foot or two between them. Members of the crews say they had to battle against waves two and three feet high last week and were unable to train for the full distance. Short sprints were their only chance of keeping fit.
