REEFTON CLUB

HANDICAP TO COUNTY FERMANAGH

AROSA AND DELLAR WIN DOUBLES RACES (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, November 18. Outstanding features of the Reefton Jockey Club’s summer meeting on Saturday were the riding successes of the Riccarton horseman. G. W. Mein, and that although three dividends were paid in only one race, and in tvx'o others there was the win dividend only, the club was able to come out with an increased oncourse turnover.

The sum invested on-course was £9722, including £1066 on the double, compared with £8398, and £BO5 respectively last year.

In six galloping events. Mein had seven mounts. He, along with others, having two rides in the Blacks Point Novice, run in two divisions. Backers of Mein s mounts would have had a very profitable day. for. besides riding the winners of both legs of the double, he was also successful on Hunter’s Praise and County Fermanagh. Visiting horses from Canterbury xvon five pt the six galloping events, including one of the divisions of the Novice Stakes. Both legs of the double were won by Canterbury-trained horses. Arosa. from the Riccarton stable of E. J. Jennings, was successful in the Antonio's Hack Handicap. first leg of the double, while the second leg went to Dellar, trained by M. R. Jones, at Washdyke. The double dividend was £l9 7s for £l. Jennings also trains County Fermanagh, winner of the County Handicap. The fourth success for visitors was by Eastern Star from the stable of P. H. Stock. Geraldine. Hunter’s Praise, which won the second division of the Novice Stakes, is trained by N. Henderson, Riccarton. Hunter's Praise, a five-year-old mare by Treasure Hunt from Eulogia, made an exhibition of her opponents in the second division of the Novice Stakes. She led from start to finish, and her winning margin was four lengths. The weather was fine, and the track was in good order. There was a good attendance. Arosa In Form Arosa put a commanding break on the field for the Antonio’s Hack Handicap, first leg of the double, half a mile from home, where she was five lengths clear and had the others struggling. She reached the post to win unextended by three lengths from Dellar, which finished on better than Big Ben. Almay, a four-year-old Defaulter mare in J. Walsh’s Omoto stable, was a warm favourite for this event. She was slow away and never threatened danger. Big Ben had a fair amount of ground to make up over the later stages of the race, and got to within a half length of Dellar. County Handicap With A. J. Stokes in the saddle. Jesse James tried to lead throughout in the County Handicap, but once into the straight County Fermanagh quickly put the issue beyond doubt. He won going away by two lengths from Chellene. which headed the tiring Jesse James by half a length. Eastern Star and Sturmer shared the pace from the start of the Reefton Hack Handicap, and half a mile from home were four lengths clear of Arabian Stream. Sturmer showed signs of weakening soon after, but Eastern Star carried on for a comfortable win. although Arabian Stream had reduced the gap to two lengths at the finish. Second Leg The four-horse field for the Springs Hack Handicap must have been the smallest on record since the introduction of doubles betting. Although penalised 101 b for his earlier win. Winkles, which again had the services of Stokes, was installed a very warm favourite. Skyrain quickly opened up a gap and was galloping very freely five lengths in front of the others at the half-mile, where W(nkles and Dellar were called upon foi efforts and gradually overhauled the leader. Winkles was first into the straight, but was worn down by’ Dellar. which won by a length, in the run to the judge. Skyrain held on for third, half a length away. Trotting Events J. G. Hampton produced a smart type of pacer in Author’s Note to win the Rotokohu Trot Handicap, over one mile and a half. The Greymouth-owned Weekender, whiclf was rather unlucky at Victoria Park at the Labour week-end. was favourite, arid attempted to win all the way. Hampton always had Author’s Note in the first half-dozen. Weekender was still in command entering the straight, but Author’s Note soon gained the advantage and she went on to win imnressively by three lengths.

The Mawheraiti Trot Handicap saw’ the Greymouth owner-trainer G. W. Nelson improve his record with Drioli. This four-year-old gelding by Paraider won twice at Westport last month. Drioli began quickly, and at the end of live furlongs had made up a good deal of his handicap from 48 vards behind. From this point on Nelson drove a well-judged race. He had to steadv’ Drioli and lose a little ground when there was a rush for positions round the bend into the straight, but once in line for home Drioli showed too much speed for the opposition.
