t i LIBERIAN COMPANY’S PURCHASE y The Canterbury Steam Shipping Company’s motor-ship Storm has been t sold to the Crescent Corporation, Monn rovia, Liberia. The purchase was completed on Friday by Miss Doris Bett tauer, of New York, who is repren senting the corporation. Miss Bettauer
recently bought the coastal motor-ship Holmdale, now the Pacific Pearl. The Storm was originally the steamer River Wear, and was built in 1920 by J. S. White and Company. Ltd., at Cowes. Soon after her launching the vessel was bought, by the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company and renamed Storm. Throughout her long service the Storm was engaged in the » service to Bluff, Dunedin, Timaru, i Lyttelton, Wellington, Wanganui, and - New Plymouth. In 1938 the Storm went to Sydney, - where she was converted from steam - to diesel power. r The one serious accident to the Storm occurred on the night of December 18, 1931. In thick fog the - vessel struck a rock off Banks Peninsula, near Akaroa. Although dam- ' aged below the waterline, the Storm managed to reach Lyttelton. When she was clocked it was found that t many of her bottom plates had been j ripped. It was in the same fog on r the same night that another of the company’s vessels, the Breeze, went - ashore at Port Robinson. ’ The Storm will be renamed the Rosa : 1 Pearl, and will be registered under » the Panamanian flag. From Lyttel- . ton she will go to Wellington, prob- , ably to load scrap iron for Japan.
