POLIOMYELITIS CAMPAIGN
VACCINATION PLANS FOR 1957 200,000 CHILDREN TO BE INOCULATED (New Zeuiana Press Association) DUNEDIN. November 16. Next year the Health Department, acting on a recommendation by the advisory committee on poliomyelitis, would vaccinate more than 200.000 children throughout New Zealand, said the Minister of Health (Mr. J. R. Hanan) today. The children’s ages would range from five to nine years, said the Minister. In addition to school children, there was a programme for the vaccination of persons likely to be in contact with poliomyelitis patients—nurses and hospital staff. Pregnant mothers would also be vaccinated. “The department hopes to be able to give poliomyelitis vaccine to 5000 persons a month in these categories, in addition to the 200,000 children.” said Mr Hanan. “The programme adopted by the Government is in accordance with the recommendations of the advisory committee, which has strong representation from the Otago Medical School.” The total expenditure on the vaccination programme next year would be £lBO.OOO. said Mr Hanan.
