Miss A. L. Smith presided at the monthly meeting of the garden circle of the women’s section of the R.S.A rhe guest speaker was Mrs H. D. Robson, who gave a demonstration on making Christmas novelties and floral arrangements. Prizes given by Mrs H Packer for the best Christmas novelties were awarded as follows:—Mrs A Maclachlan 1, Mrs E. Macdonald 2 competition results were.—Best bloom. A class, Mrs A. E. Cooper 1. Mrs C. W. Aker 2. Mrs A. Nesbit 3; B class. Mrs G. R. Woolford 1, Mrs A. Barker 2. Mrs Edwards 3. The competitions were judged by Mrs Robson.

Motions of sympathy were passed with the relatives of Mrs W. C. T. Gay, Miss M. E. Jones and Mrs B. E. Craig (Auckland) at a meeting of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women.

The November meeting of the Mount Pleasant Garden Club took the form of an outing to Father Taylor’s garden at Leeston. Mrs W D. M Jamieson thanked Father Taylor for his hospitality.

Christmas toys for children were ■nade at the November meeting ci the Somerfield Townswomen’s Guild arts and crafts circle, under the leadership of Mrs C. S. Fuller. A competition was won by Mrs McGarva and Miss Whittaker. The Cashmere sub-centre of the Red Cross Society held its final meeting for 1956 at the residence of tnc president. Mrs J. A. The St. Matthew’s Mothers’ Union entertained members of other branches recently at their annual party. Musical items were given by Mrs C. Cogswell, Messrs M. Lummis and Grahaeme Johnson. A one-act play, produced by Mrs" Bragg, was presented by three members.
