(New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, October 21, Volcanic spoil covers + he body of an 18-year-old workman in a 40ft-deep shaft at Tangiwai. The youth. Christian Hohana Akapita. of Ohakune, was’ working on the new bridge to span the Wangaehu stream at Tangiwai. The accident which caused his death occurred at 7.20 p.m. on Thursday. Immediately other workmen began the attempt to dig him out. They worked throughout Thursday night and a?l day on Friday, and are still trying to find the body. Akapita was working in a steel cylinder with a pressure lock on it, 39 feet below the river. At 7.20 p.m., the foreman and another man were in the air chamber in the shaft. Below them, Akapita was working on the wall of the shaft when suddenly the chamber shot up about 17ft, leaving Akapita below.

MOTOR-CYCLIST SUFFERS HEAD INJURIES

Ronald Harry Gray, of 26 Smith street, Kaiapoi, suffered head injuries when his motor-cycle and a car collided at the corner of Worcester street and Latimer square yesterday. Mr Gray was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, where his condition was reported last evening as satisfactory.
