RACING Highlander—Coleridge For Trentham Double

The Auckland jockey G. F. Hughe* cill ride the favourites in both legs rf the totalizator double on the second day of the Wellington spring meeting gt Trentham today. "ffis mount in the first les. the Watkins Handicap, is Llanisfair. and he will be on Coleridge in the second i e ». the Awatea Handicao. These horses were third in their engagement on the first day of the yeetinz —Llanisfair to Highlander and Zobov in the Wellington Handicap, and Coleridge to Feterford and Yoho in the mile Wainui Handicap. Hughes may find the first leg the yore difficult in his attempt to win the double. Llanisfair will have conditions more to his liking than last week, but honours will have to be hard-earned Like Llanisfair. Highlander and Cardigan will appreciate the dry track: and the South Island horses. Calcutta Sweep tnd Field Chief, are almost certain to play big roles in the finish, and could make first-day form valueless Yoho and Bulla have dropped out of the Watkins Handicap, but there will probably be at least 20 runners Unless there is heavy rain today ted that seems unlikely, Peterford rill not run in the Awatea Handicap Lucrative which, at best, would have been a strong opponent for Coleridge' has also been scratched.

Coleridge should hold safely those closest to him in the handicap; but e may have to give of one of his test gallops to master Lochie which will have conditions all in his favour with 7-7 to carry from No. 6 at the tamer.

Though he beat a weak lot in the Southland Guineas on a soft track Lochie is essentially a top-of-th~-ground galloper, and a very good The improvement in the going will also help Zariba, whose three-vear-cld form last season was of a good standard. Zariba showed race-win-ning dash in his training earlier in the week. He will be ridden by VV J. Broughton.

The Riccarton jockey. C. McDonald is unable to make thp weight to ride Domitare at 8-1 in the Awatea Handicap. A replacement had not .been engaged yesterday. Barnsdale Scratched The field for the Glen Hurdles took on a different appearance yesterday with the scratching of the pre-post favourite. Barnsdale. There is nothing wrong with Barnsdale. He is being reserved for the last day on Mondavi when the distance will be two miles/ B. L. Hillis will now ride the lightweight Royal Sheik. This five-vear-old Neptune gelding has not raced’over hurdles this season. Two starts back as a hurdler he won the St. Heliers Hack Hurdles at Ellerslie in April. Royal Sheik has fair ability on the fat, and should trouble the top weight, Rangi s Luck, which is now likely to be favourite.

Kaye Gilpin, Broadwood, and Bonny Kildare have dropped out of the Trial Stakes and Beau Fort and Non Li Quet may also be withdrawn.

Pink Rose and Willie Wolseley will represent the South Island. The odds appear to be stacked heavily against Willie Wolseley, which drew' the outside position in the original field of 28 Fuel. Rising High and Vita Glow have been scratched for the Desert Gold Stakes, but a three dividend race is still certain, although betting will be dominated by the brilliant Passive, with strong place support for her stablemate. Rarobar.

Top weight of 9-0 may not put victory in the Karitane Handicap beyond the reach of last week's Wellesley Stakes winner. Spiborough. which will be ridden today by J. W. Harris, who was on Breve last week. Devilry Starting A start for the Riccarton-trained Devilry in the Belmont Hack Handicap was in doubt on Thursday because he had drawn wide; but it was decided yesterday to run this good galloper because it was almost certain that the track would be dry. while there was a doubt whether conditions would be the same for the third day. Devilry is of little account when the going is soft, but he is above average on firm tracks. Purser, the Wellington Guineas third, and St. Vincent, the Avondale Guineas second and Great Northern Guineas third, may make this race a , clean sweep for the three-year-olds. j Selections:—

SYNTAX TO RETURN TO N.Z.

OWNER DISAPPOINTED AT LOSS OF FORM

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rpc. 9.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 19 Syntax has been scratched from the Melbourne Cup. The Cup was the New Zealand glamour horse’s mission when he came to Australia. His trainer, Stan Walker, said today he had been disappointed at Syntax’s loss of form. He was sorrv Australians had not seen him at his brilliant best. He was taking the horse back to New Zealand without having another race in Australia. Svntax would be freshened up in his own countrv and would probably run in several rich New Zealand races over the Christmas period. Svntax was favourite for both the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups when betting for the two races opened. He was heavily backed straight out foi both races, and coupled in a multitude of doubles in the two races. Hie scratching means that a lot of monev will go to doubles bookmakers. Svntax had three seconds in Svdney. hut failed dismally in the Caulfield Stakes He made only the four appearances.
