RACING Highlander—Coleridge For Trentham Double

This five-vear-old Neptune gelding has not raced’over hurdles this season. Two starts back as a hurdler he won the St. Heliers Hack Hurdles at Ellerslie in April. Royal Sheik has fair ability on the fat, and should trouble the top weight, Rangi s Luck, which is now likely to be favourite.

Kaye Gilpin, Broadwood, and Bonny Kildare have dropped out of the Trial Stakes and Beau Fort and Non Li Quet may also be withdrawn.

Pink Rose and Willie Wolseley will represent the South Island. The odds appear to be stacked heavily against Willie Wolseley, which drew' the outside position in the original field of 28 Fuel. Rising High and Vita Glow have been scratched for the Desert Gold Stakes, but a three dividend race is still certain, although betting will be dominated by the brilliant Passive, with strong place support for her stablemate. Top weight of 9-0 may not put victory in the Karitane Handicap beyond the reach of last week's Wellesley Stakes winner. Spiborough. which will be ridden today by J. W. Harris, who was on Breve last week. Devilry Starting A start for the Riccarton-trained Devilry in the Belmont Hack Handicap was in doubt on Thursday because he had drawn wide; but it was decided yesterday to run this good galloper because it was almost certain that the track would be dry. while there was a doubt whether conditions would be the same for the third day. Devilry is of little account when the going is soft, but he is above average on firm tracks. Purser, the Wellington Guineas third, and St. Vincent, the Avondale Guineas second and Great Northern Guineas third, may make this race a , clean sweep for the three-year-olds. j Selections:—

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rpc. 9.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 19 Syntax has been scratched from the Melbourne Cup. The Cup was the New Zealand glamour horse’s mission when he came to Australia. His trainer, Stan Walker, said today he had been disappointed at Syntax’s loss of form. He was sorrv Australians had not seen him at his brilliant best. He was taking the horse back to New Zealand without having another race in Australia. Svntax would be freshened up in his own countrv and would probably run in several rich New Zealand races over the Christmas period. Svntax was favourite for both the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups when betting for the two races opened. He was heavily backed straight out foi both races, and coupled in a multitude of doubles in the two races. Hie scratching means that a lot of monev will go to doubles bookmakers. Svntax had three seconds in Svdney. hut failed dismally in the Caulfield Stakes He made only the four appearances.
