The resignation of Miss E. M Blakiston from the secretaryship of the South Island Publicity Association was received at the annual meeting of the association yesterday She has held the office for 21 years. The meeting was told that a great part of her effort in that time had been voluntary The association decided to make her a

monetary gift and send her a letter expressing appreciation of her long services.

About 50 delegates and their wives from many parts of New’ Zealand are visiting Christchurch for the 1956 Philatelic Congress. This evening they will be entertained at a buffet tea and social. Tomorrow they will be taken for a scenic drive, including the Summit road, after which they will visit Dr H. Turner Jennings at his home in Garden road for afternoon tea. A ‘‘Snow Ball” arranged by the Canterbury Ski Association was held last evening in the Winter Garden when Mr L. Cooper, the secretarytreasurer of the association, assisted by a committee, entertained about 250 members of ski and winter sports clubs from all parts of Canterbury and their friends. During the evening the trophies won during the season were presented by the president of the association (Mr J. C. Maher). Before the ball several private dinner parties were held A suitable memorial that would worthily commemorate the late Dr. Doris Gordon was discussed at a recent meeting of the National Council of Women in Auckland A letter was received from the New Zealand Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society, of which Dr. Gordon was founder and secretary, suggesting a Doris Gordon Travelling Fellowship to bring a visitlife gynaecolo ist and obstetrician ot world standing to New Zealand annually, and the launching of a Dominionwide appeal toward this end A subcommittee of the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society has been set up to meet the executive of the Auckland branch of the Na iona l Council of Women.

Competitions of the 2nd Christchurch Battalion of the Girls’ Life Brigade were held recently at the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church This vear entries were for handwriting, a Scripture passage, paper flower making. hobbies and scarf making. A number of companies entered the competition. which was won by the 11th Christchurch Company (St. Ninian’s Presbyterian).

A party to celebrate the first anniversary of the formation of the Sydenham branch of the League of Mothers was held recently. Mrs D McFadden cut the birthday cake Two plays were presented by members of the St. Albans branch, piano duets were played by Mesdames J Linton and Gilbert and Margaret Cox sang, accompanied by Mrs Linton Circle reports were presented at the monthly meeting of the Beckenham Townswomen’s Guild. A letter from the Tolworth guild in England was read. Reports on the annual council meeting at Hastings were given bv Mrs A. Thomson and Mrs W Grenfell. The Rev W M. Hendrie was the guest speaker, and songs from the Isle of Lewis w’ere sung by Mrs Whitehead. accompanied by Mrs C. Richards. A comnetition was won by Mrs Hart, with Mrs Rollands second, and Mrs Robertson third. Nurse G. Longsan and Nurse A Brown of the Beckenham School dental clinic, showed films at the monthlv meeting of the Beckenham Infant School Mothers Club. Mrs C. Chaston presided
