SALMONELLA IN EGG IMPORTS
N.Z. EXCLUDED FROM BRITISH COMPLAINT
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. October 18
The director of Britain’s Food Hv?jpne Laboratory (Dr. Betty Hobbs) said today that criticism of egg products imported into England, made today by an official of the Portsmouth Public Health Laboratory, did not applv to Australian or New Zealand eggs. The director of the Portsmouth Public Health Laboratory (Dr. K. E. A Hushes) said today that frozen eggs imported from foreign and Commonwealth countries have been found to contain germs which might lead to fond poisoning. Dr. Hobbs said that the bacteria referred to by Dr. Hughes, the salmonella bacteria, was present to some extent in all frozen whole-egg oroducts (eggs not in shell) including those from Australia.
However, the incidence of the germ in Australian egg-products was insignificant. The same applied to New Zealand egg-products, of which onlv a verv small quantity was tested because imports of this type of product from New Zealand are low.
Australian and New Zealand eggs are as clear of infection as could be expected, said Dr. Hobbs.
