AUSTRALIANS OUT FOR 187

Pakistan Needs 42 For Victory

(Rec. 12.10 a.m ) KARACHI. Oct. 15. Scoring 187 in the second innings. Australia todav set Pakistan onlv 69 runs to win the first test between the two countries. Though Australia gained a quick success when Hanif hooked r ball from Davidson to Harvey in the leg trap. Pakistan seemed well set for victory and at tea had scored 27 for one wicket. They needed 42 to win. Benaud, who yesterday was responsible for averting an innings defeat, was dismissed today after scoring three more runs. These three came from Kardar. but* when Fazal Mahmud began to bowl the next over, the Australian hopes of a good second innings total vanished. With two balls he bowled Benaud for 56 and had Lindwall leg before. In his next over he bowled Johnson. Australia’s score of 138 for six fell to 143 for nine in a few minutes. But the innings was not over. Langley and Davidson, undaunted by the score, decided that attack was the best policy and with Davidson driving with great force and Langley keeping the bowlers out, the Australian score slowly mounted. The crowd became restive. “Get them out,” they cried. At lunch, the partnership was unbroken and the score had mounted to 180. The innings ended at 187 soon after lunch when Davidson edged a catch to the wicket-keeper. Scores were: — PAKISTAN First Innings •• 199 AUSTRALIA First Innings .. .. •• 80 Second Innings C.
