RUSSLEIGH—ASSEMBLY FOR WINGATUI DOUBLE

RACING

Strato was scratched yesterday for the Federal Handicap, the second leg of the double on the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's spring meeting at Wingatui today. Royal Mail will also drop out of the Federal Handicap if the track is in good order, which seems likely after a week of fine weather at Wingatui. Royal Mail is also engaged in the Wakari Hurdles, in which he is top weight with 11-7. Teina. Landon, and Copperfield, which had the finish of the open sprint to themselves last Saturday, will meet again in the Federal Handicap. With the expected improvement in the track they are likely to get stronger opposition from some of the others, among them the Riccarton-trained Assembly and the Christchurch-owned Sawdust, which has been fourth in three of his last four races.

Russleigh and Instigator came more strongly into favour for the first leg. the Grandstand Handicap, with good trials at Wingatui on Thursday. Russleigh will be making her first appearance at the meeting, and she is obviously at her best for this test. She has yet to win over 11 furlongs, but was a creditable fourth over that distance at Ashburton a fortnight ago. Shahwan yesterday completed his preparation for the Dunedin Guineas, for which he will be a short-priced favourite, with a sprint over five furion crs under a good hold. Purser, one of Shah wan’s well-per-formed rivals, also shaped well in a similar task. Shahwan’s owner. Mr H. D. Greenwood. had his colours carried to victory in the Dunedin Guineas of 1938 by the great galloper Defaulter. Shahwan will be ridden today by C. McDonald, who won the classic on Kingship three years ago. Shahwan and Purser, also Water Boy, are from Riccarton stables, and the best of the others mav not be able to match them for ability. Wondon’s mission is likely to be the earlier race, the Milbum Handicap. so the Guineas may have only six runners. Clinton Belle has dropped out of the Juvenile Handicap because she has a cold. Bow Tie. one of the early favourites, will now be ridden bv R J Mackie. Jun., who won the McLean Stakes on Bow Tie’s stablemate Surapt last Saturday. * Tie did well to finish third in the McLean Stakes after a slow start A slight paddock injury may prevent Rex Robe from running in the Novice Handicap, in which he is top weight Selections:— •J 1,1 ? OHINEMURI CLUB ‘The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, September 21. The Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s spring meeting will be held at Paeroa tomorrow when the main attraction will be the Poland Cup, of about one mile and a half, for £lOOO. The local mare, Joy Step, and Lady Yet, Fettle, and Arawa have admirers for the race, and it seems likely that they will dispute the finish. The Poland Cup will be the first leg of the double. There is a good collection of smart sprinters in the second leg, the Flying Handicap. Notable are Smiling Princess, Kaha_ Lord Abel. Fancy Dress, and Royal Pepefa. Smiling Princess is in form, and favourably drawn ~at the start, so she may be the favourite.

The fields in the other events are large, and provision has had to be made for two divisions in the Ngatea Plate and the Bienan Hack Handicap. The ground dried with the fine weather during the week, and if there is rain, the going will be good although easy.
