The sum of £4BO, with more money to come in, was raised at a clothes shop yesterday in the Caledonian Hall fo r the aged and blind. Lady ClarkHall. organiser of the shop, and the president of the clothes shop committee (Mrs J. G. Collins), expressed their thanks for the support given by well-wishers for gifts of clothing, furniture. and antiques. “The shop was most successful,” Mrs Collins said last evening.

The Home Economics Association celebrated its twenty-sixth birthday recently. A birthday cake, made by Mrs R. W. Borland, was cut by the president (Miss E. D. Klilner). Miss B. Batstone played piano solos and Miss F. Calvert gave humorous sketches. Mrs F. le Cren gave an address on porcelain and exhibited some pieces of value and beauty. A large amount of children’s clothing and dried milk was -eceived for delivery to the Save the Children Fund.

Mrs O. Hancox presided at the September meeting of the Hornby branch of the League of Mothers. The Rev. R. Falla spoke on the sanctity of marriage. Songs were sung by Mrs J. Hamm. Some novel floral pieces were arranged by Mrs H. E. Radley, the speaker at the September meeting of the Redcliffs-Sumner Garden Club Mrs W. H. Bowen presided, and Mrs J. W. Hadfield thanked the speaker Competitions resulted: arrangement of spring flowers, class A, Mrs D. Blackwell 1, Mrs G. Eames 2, Mrs K. A. Brooke 3; class B, Mrs F. Best 1, Mrs T A. Searell 2 and 3; best bloom. Mrs J.’ P. Hudd 1, Mrs A. B. Hughes 2. Mrs Searell 3. Mrs Grimshaw presided at.the September meeting of the Kaiapoi Plunket Mothers’ Club. The Rev. B. H. Risely showed films of a visit to Australia. Scotland and the Solomon Islands. Competition winners were Mesdames Hamilton, Baker, Wyatt. Fenwick and Murray.

A competition of photographs of babies of all ages was opened by the Mayoress (Mrs R. M. Macfarlane). The competition has been arranged by the “green” committee of the queen carnival to raise funds for amenities at the Banks Avenue School. The carnival will close on October 6 with a fair at the school. The “green” queen is Miss Peggy Guy. There are seven sections in the photographic competition, and entries have been received from all parts of Canterbury, the West Coast and Nelson.

Four one-act plays were recently presented by the North Beach Drama Club in the Baptist Church Hall, Bowhill road. The president (Mrs L. A Leverett) thanked the producer. Miss Mary Wigley. The stage manager was Mrs Ray Wood, and the musicians Mrs P. Goulding and Mr Pearce. Members of the casts were Mesdames Rene Darby, Phyl Yates, Misses P. Richard, Mariette Dixon, Doris Brading, Laurel Turton, Rose Wooldridge, May Whitehead, Betty Palmer, Pat Richard, and Messrs G. Watson, F. Partelton. and D. Austin.

Eight arrangements using driftwood, flowering shrubs, spring flowers and various containers were demonstrated by Mrs C. S. Ayers, of Rangiora, at the monthly meeting of the Woodend Garden Club. Competitions resulted: Quality blooms, three daffodils: Miss Dawkins 1, Mrs H. Vaughan 2, Mrs Turnbull 3. Decorative, A class: Miss Dawkins 1, Mrs Ballinger 2, Mrs A Morriss 3. B class: Mrs Turnbull 1, Mrs A. Robinson 2. Mrs Stokes and Mrs Turner (equal) 3. Vegetables: Mrs Eder 1, Mrs Ballinger 2. Mrs Archer presided.

A roster was arranged at the monthly meeting -of the Kedcliffs-Mount Pleasant sub-centre of pie Red Cross Society for helpers to prepare vegetables for the Good Neighbour Service during October. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of Miss A. M. Hood-Williams a foundation member who died recently Final plans were made to hold cooked-food stalls in Redcliffs tomorrow week to assist the sub-centre's funds. An appeal was made for clean used linen and blankets, and babies’ wear for the emergency cupboard, and for hot-water bag covers and small tea cosies as Christmas gifts for the elderly sick Children’s clothing was handed in for emergency needs.
