MAORI GIRLS’ TOURNAMENT
CHRISTCHURCH TEAMS WIN TROPHIES Two Christchurch teams won the senior and junior divisions of the annual South Island Maori basketball totirnament held in Christchurch on Saturday. In the senior division, for the Pitama Cup, the Marama Maori Youth Club beat the Maori Community Centre (Christchurch) in the final by 6 goals to 4. The junior section, for the Kaahu Trophy, was won by a Maori Community Centre team. Ten teams from many parts of the South Island took part in the tournament They were:—Otakau and Rata (Dunedin), Huirapa (Temuka). Morven Sports Club, Pipiwharauroa (Tuahiwi), the Marama Maori Youth Club, the Maori Community Centre (two teams), and Otautahi (Christchurch ). The following South Island Maori team has been chosen to play the North Island Maoris at Rotorua on October 6:— Forwards. R. Rangi (Youth Club), L. Cameron (Otautahi), captain, M. TeMoana (Rata). Centres: P. Kamo (Youth Club), vice-captain, M Waaka (Rata), M. Te-Koopa (Rata) Defence: L. Subribski (Youth Club), S. Heath (Community Centre), R. Williams (Community Centre). Reserve: F. Meagher (Huirapa). This team played a Canterbury second grade team on Saturday and was beaten by 12 goals to 7.
