HOCKEY

SUPERIORITY ON ATTACK POOR GOAL-SHOOTING MARS PLAY (New Zeatana Press Association, MASTERTON, August 26. Showing definite superiority on attack and better stickwork and positional play, the New Zealand hockey team beat New South Wales, 7-1, at Masterton yesterday. Well supported by the halves, the New Zealand forwards combined well and displayed clever stickwork. At times they were brilliant. However, many scoring opportunities went begging because the shooting at goal was astray. , New Zealand did most of the attacking. but good defence kept the half-time score down to 2-0. In the closing stages of the game New Zealand had a definite superiority, and scored three quick goals. For New Zealand the scorers were K. Cumberpatch (2), G. McGregor (2), P. Bygrave (2). and C. Currie. B. Booth scored for New South Wales.

The teams were:— NFW Zealand:— W. Schaefer. J. Abrahams, R. Johanson, B. Turner J. Tynan, L. Loudon. N. Hobson. K. Cumperpatch, C. Currie, G. McGregor. P. Bygrave. New South Wales:—R. Anderson, D. Spackman, T. Croke, K. McLay, W. Armstrong (captain), E. Holmes. M. Anderson. B. Booth. M. McCormack. K. Spedding, G. Walker. For New Zealand, the left wing forward attack of Bygrave. Cumberpatch, and McGregor was outstanding. Had the goal shooting been a little more accurate, New Zealand would have gained a much bigger score. The forwards received splendid support from the halves. Turner. Tynan, and Loudon. In goal, Shaefer. playing his first match for New Zealand. made some spectacular saves. In the New South Wales side, the left inner. Booth, and the centre forward, Spedding, played skilfully when they got possession. Spackman and Croke in the backs played very soundly. In goal. Anderson had a busy day, and made some brilliant saves.
