Composition Wins Hunt Cup Steeples At Wingatui

RACING

“The Press” Special Service

DUNEDIN, August 26. Composition, which was second to French Echo in the Hunt Cup at Riccarton, scored his most important success to date when he wore down his stable-mate, Gypsy Boy. short of the post to take a half-length decision in the Hunt Cup Steeples, the main event at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting at Wingatui yesterday. Wilshire was three-quarters of a length away third, and then there was a gap of six lengths to the firm favourite, Gabriel’s Gully, which tired over the concluding stages after attempting to make the pace throughout. Composition, Gypsy Boy, and Gabriel’s Gully are trained at Wingatui by H. A. Anderton, who prepared the first two horses, Irish Glance and Composition, in last year’s event. Composition is raced in the partnership of Messrs T. Coltman Wellington) and E. R. Curtis (Waimate).

Silence gave a glimpse of his brilliant best in scoring the easiest win of the day when he beat Horatius, the win favourite in the Tally-Ho Handicap, the first leg of the double. The Timanova gelding forced the pace practically throughout, and drew well clear in the run home.

In a total doubles pool of £22.030 10s, including £18,363 5s off-course. Silence carried 7872 J 10s tickets, and

1178 of these were reinvested on Litmus, the winner of the second leg, the Wingatui Handicap. The winning combination paid £3O 18s for £l. Litmus was having his first test in open company, and had not raced since he beat Undergrowth on the same course in February. but he came through his task in an impressive manner, for after leading all the way, he beat Strato by a length and a half. The meeting was held in fine weather before a fair attendance. The track was in good order. The totalisator on-course handled £29,805, a decrease of £459 10s on last year’s meeting.

Hunt Cup Running Gypsy Boy appeared to have the Otago Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase in safe keeping when he led over the final fence, but his rider did not show much vigour when Composition challenged him in the last half-furlong, and he was beaten by half a length. Reuben and Wilshire drifted to the rear in the early running, and Gabriel’s Gully led over the first fence from Stormtide, Chief Light, Composition, and Gypsy Boy. Stormtide and Gabriel’s Gully were on terms with a round to go, with Composition right up, and four lengths to Wilshire, ahead of Chief Light and Gypsy Boy. Reuben was tailed off.

Gypsy Boy improved to join Composition in the trailing position behind Gabriel’s Gully racing into the back. Stormtide, which hit the sod wall, was dropping away, with Chief Light, which was jumping patchily, next. Gypsy Boy jumped clear at the first of the double near the six furlongs, and led round the turn by two lengths from Gabriel’s Gully, with Wilshire and Composition handy. Gypsy Boy looked all over a winner after jumping the last fence, but Composition got. up to head him in the last few strides. Wilshire was threequarters of a length back, third, with six lengths to the favourite, Gabriel’s Gully, which weakened in the run home. Stormtide was a poor fifth, with Chief Light next.

Easy Win for Silence Silence came back to form with a vengeance in the Tally-Ho Handicap, and after leading practically all the way he drew away in the straight to win untested by six lengths. Lumphanan, Baffling Eyes, The Bruiser, Silence (wide), Horatius. and Roi Du Bois raced in close order for the first furlong. Silence soon worked clear, and with six furlongs to run he was pacemaking by a length from Horatius. Lumphanan and The Bruiser were next, with Baffling Eyes and Garoloch on terms ahead of Roi Du Bois and Balveine.

Horatius was challenging Silence into the straight, but R. J. Skelton did not have to ask Silence for an extra effort, and he quickly drew' away to beat Horatius by six length. Garoloch. which had improved to be third into the straight, held that place in the run home, a length and a quarter behind Horatius. Balveine came from seventh on the turn for fourth, but he was five lengths away. Baffling Eyes and Roi Du Bois were half a length back, with two lengths to Lumphanan and The Bruiser. Litmus Outclasses Field Having his first race for seven months, Litmus made a winning deubt in open company when he lead a’l the way to score an easy win in the Wingatui Handicap, second leg of the double. Blue Robe. Maritea, and Landon were chopped back at the start. Litmus jumped out first, and at the halfmile he was shading Aberdeen, with Strato, Sure Swift and Landon next, clear of Golden Morn (which received a check), Kasr-el-Nil, and The Hob. Aberdeen and Litmus were on terms into the straight, where Strato was in third place, with two lengths to The Hob, Sure Swift, and Golden Morn. Litmus quickly mastered Aberdeen, and after being three lengths clear at the furlong, he came on to win with something to spare by a length and a half from Strato. Aberdeen was a length away, third, with a similar distance to The Hob. which was running on. Landon was close up. with five lengths to Golden Morn, clear of Sure Swift and Maritea. Results:—

MINOR EVENTS SEAVIEW HURDLES TO PRINCE CONSORT “The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, August 26. Taking charge six furlongs from home, Prince Consort finished too strongly to give the opposition any chance in the Seaview Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles. He was never in danger of defeat, coasting home to win by four lengths. Royal Mail was the early leader, but Crossed Keys was forcing the pace running out of the straight, but fell soon after, leaving Tisred, Black Briar, and Royal Mail in the lead. Black Briar took over soon after and was two lengths clear going down the back from Royal Mail, Tisred, Prince Consort, Miss Step, Vocalize, Exodus, and two lengths to King o’ Day. Prince Consort worked to the front at the six furlongs, and at the half-mile had an advantage of four lengths from Miss Step, Royal Mail, Vocalize, Black Briar, Tisred, and Exodus. Prince Consort was not extended in the run home, and Vocalize finished on for second two lengths ahead of Royal Mail. Exodus made up ground to be half a length away fourth and was followed in by Naughty Boy, Tisred. Black Briar, King o’ Day, &nd Danger Point. Wondon’s Effort Wondon, which was solidly supported in the Trial Stakes, led over the last five furlongs to win decisively. Flying Field, Floral Note, and Recluse were slow away. Edgewood, Mitre Peak, and Liban were the early leaders, but Wondon ran clear at the end of a furlong and led past the half-mile from Kotiti and Mitre Peak, with Edgewood and Liban handy, ahead of Arch Villain. Wondon held his lead into the straight, where Mitre Peak, Kotiti, Liban. and Edgewood were in close order, with three lengths to Arch Villain and Recluse. Kotiti, Edgewood, and Liban were practically on terms with Wondon at the furlong. but the Someo colt came again and shook them off to win by two and a half lengths. Edgewood held off Liban. which had every chance, by half a neck for second, with a length to Kotiti. Recluse was fifth, but was beaten off. five lengths away. Shr was followed by Larboard Watch. Mitre Peak (which was checked at the furlong* Arch Villain, and Flying Field. Cardinal King Surprises Having his first race since last November, Cardinal King outclassed the field ii the Vauxhall Hack Handicap after leadin; , practically all the way. Irish Bid and Salfaulter received the worst of the start. Royal Vision. Cardinal King, Pips, Winning Wave, and Master David were the first to show out. Cardinal King and Winning Wave settled down in front at the end of a furlong, and they led past the five two lengths clear of Pips, with Royal Vision, Master David, Our Lorraine. Wayren (moving up wide out), and Lucky Dewar next. Cardinal King appeared to have the measure of Winning Wave into the straight, where they were four lengths clear of Pips, with Royal Vision and Lucky Dewar challenging ahead of Master David and Wayren. Cardinal King came on to win. with something in hand, by three ana a half lengths from Royal Vision, which got up to beat Lucky Dewar by a length. Winning Wave was a weakening fourth, another length back. There were two lengths to Pips, followed by Galactic, Armando, Wayren. Well Cut, and Master David.

B. S. Irwin Steeplechase Hasty Bill and Low Bridge fought out a thrilling finish all the way down the straight in the B. S. Irwin Steeplechase, with Hasty Bill staying on the better to win by half a length. Hasty Bill, Formation, and Low Bridge were racing in close order with a round to go, 10 lengths clear of Waikana and Irish Glance. Formation and Hasty Bill were two lengths clear of Low Bridge after jumping the boards with a mile to run, where Waikana fell. Formation tried to run through the wing two fences later and dropped his rider. This left Low Bridge two lengths clear of Hasty Bill, but the pair were on terms at the half-mile, and Hasty Bill ran to a threelength lead m the next furlong. They were together again into the straight and landed over the last fence on terms, and it was not until near the post that Hasty Bill gained his winning margin. Reuben was 100 yards back third, beating Irish Glance by two and a half lengths. There was a big gap to Six Cylinder. Top-weight Wins Column mastered top weight of 9-12 in the Taieri Handicap to win impressively after being in a handy position throughout. His rider, R. J. Skelton, who had earlier in the day scored on Silence in the Tally-Ho Handicap, was content to follow the leading division until inside the furlong, where his mount’s finishing effort soon took him clear, and he had a length and a half to spare from Loyal Chief at the post.

The field got away to a good start, and Plunder was the first to show out from Sir Gerald. Lacus. and Loyal Chief. Loyal Chief took charge with a mile to rim. and at the half-mile was leading Plunder, Cassius, Meadow Gold. Marsana. Column, and Flying Doctor, with two lengths to Cocos, ahead of Lord Fane. The Sloucher, Admiral’s Keep, and Ambrose. Loyal Chief still held charge at the furlong from Plunder and Cassius, but Column did not leave the issue in doubt with his finishing run. Loyal Chief was second, half a length clear of Cassius, which beat Plunder by a head. Marsana was a length away fifth, followed in by Meadow Gold, Cocos. Flying Doctor, Ambrose, and Admiral’s Keep.
