WINNER CAPITALISES ON ERRORS (New Zeatana Preus Association/ WANGANUI. August 26. The Wanganui Rugoy team, which will play Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield next Saturday, beat Wellington at Wanganui on Saturday by 29 points (five tries, four converted, one penalty goal, and one field goal) to 12 (tour tries). Wellington fielded a strong side. Overconfidence by the Wellington players contributed to errors, of which the robust Wanganui pack took advantage. The best of the Wanganui backs were L. Edwards (half-back), D. McPhail (first five-eighths), and D. Mander (full-back). Among the forwards. M. Potaka. T. Oldfield, J. Karatau, and W. Ericson were the best.
M. J. Palmer (centre) was the best of a subdued Wellington back line, and J. B Hutchinson, I. N. McEwan, and D. N. Mclntosh were the best of the Wellington pack. For Wanganui. Edwards. Ericson, Mander, Lockett, and Fitchett each scored a try. Mander converted one try, and O’Leary three. McPhail kicked a field goal, and O’Leary a penalty goal. For Wellinron. Palmer. W. H. Clark, Jaiden. and Smith each scored a try. SEDDON SHIELD LOST BY BULLER GOLDEN BAY-MOTUEKA WINS AT WESTPORT (New Zealand Press Association) WESTPORT, Aug. 26. Golden Bay-Motueka defeated Buller by 14 points to 12, at Westport on Saturday. to win the Seddon Shield, which was won by Buller earlier in the season from Nelson. The winning points came in the tasi two minutes with a goal from a penalty by W. H. Taylor, Golden Bay-Motueka’s captain. Taylor scored 11 of his side's points, all with goal kicks. The outstanding player on the field was the former All Black, R. G. Bowers, at first five-eighths for Golden BayMotueka. The winning team’s pack held Buller well, and their backs were much superior. Taylor, at full-back, and F. Hobson, second five-eiehths. also played well, while G. Rangi, J Curnow, and R Walker were the best forwards. Buller's most impressive backs were A Kerr, at full-back, and M. White, centre three-quarters, while in the pack G. Anderson. M. Harrington, and K. Sprackett showed up well. Golden Bay-Motueka’s points came from a try by Hobson, converted by Taylor, and three goals from penalties, kicked by Taylor. For Buller. M. Easton and S Orman scored tries, and Kerr and Anderson kicked goals from penalties.
OTAGO BEATS SOUTH CANTERBURY (New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU. August 26. The Otago Rugby representative team beat South Canterbury, 14-6, in a scrappy match played at Timaru on Saturday. The Otago forwards outplayed South Canterbury in all phases except the loose but . the handling of both sets of backs was poor For Otago, W R. S. Reeve scored a try. which was converted by P. J. Mcllroy Mcllroy also kicked a penalty goal, and J. Hotop kicked tWo dropped goals. For South Canterbury G. Taylor kicked two penalty goals BOYS’ TOURNAMENT AT INVERCARGILL (Neib Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL. Aug. 26. Southland and Canterbury shared the honours in the Southland centennial primary schools’ Rugby tournament, which ended at Invercargill on Saturday Each side gained two wins. Otago and South Canterbury had one win each.
