LOST U.S. NAVY AIRCRAFT
Britain Asks China For News (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) , LONDON, August 25. Britain has asked Communist China about the fate of the United States Navy aircraft missing over the China Sea since Thursday last, a Foreign Office spokesman said today. The spokesman said the United States Government had asked the British Government to make inquiries about the fate of the aircraft. “We have requested our representative in Peking to do so,” he said. Britain, which has diplomatic relations with the Communist Chinese Government, usually acts for the United States, which does not recognise the Peking regime.
The missing plane was a Navy P4M-1 Martin Mercator aircraft, with 16 men on board. ’♦ sent a radio message on Wednesday that it was under attack over international waters 32 miles from the China coast. Vice-Admiral Stuart Ingersoll, Commander of the United States Seventh Fleet, announced today that the search had been abartdoned for the survivors of the aircraft, according to a message from Taipeh (Formosa) He said the search was ended at 11.25 a.m. (local time) yesterday. American ships and aircraft taking part in the search in the China Sea south-east of Shanghai were ordered to return to their normal operations.
