Rag-Picker Banks 6000 Dollars
(Rec. 11.50 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 24. An elderly New York woman known as “Rag-Picker Rose’’ who hoarded her savings by wrapping them in old newspapers. today finally stuffed, wads of dog-cared banknotes into nillow cases and banked her bundles of money. The woman was Mrs Rose Goldstein Her stooped figure, a bag over her shoulders, and shoes sizes too big for her. has long been familiar to neighbours as she mode her habitual scrap-collecting rounds. She came to the attention of the nolice after two robberies of her rubbish-filled flat cost her 1000 dollars. Mrs Goldstein told the police that her husband had walked out 25 years aeo. but that she had managed to save “a lot of money.” She assured detectives that she had between 20.000 dollars and 30.000 dollar? but she said she had not counted it for 10 years. The nolice persuaded her to bank 1’ n money she kept in a trunk filled with old newspapers, -he latest dated 1939. Under police escort. Mrs Goldstein carried fo”r pillow cases full of money to the bank. A final count by the tellers totalled 6137 dollars 98 cents.
