Khrushchev’s Warning
(Rec. 11.30 n.m.) MOSCOW. August 24. The Soviet Communist Party chief. Mr Khrushchev, was reported to have told diplomats at a Rumanian Embassy recep'ion last night that Britain and France should be careful about becoming involved in a war with Egypt. He said that if war were imposed on Egypt it would become a “just or holy war’’ from the Egyptian point of view. In this event “the Arabs would not stand alone, there would be volunteers,’’ diplomats who took part in the conversation quoted Mr Khrushchev as saying. The diplomats said there was no amplification of these remarks, which were made in Mr Khrushchev's “usual expansive manner.’’ Reactions In Europe (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. August 23. Reuter cablegrams tonight gave these reactions to the outcome of the Suez conference in London. Paris: Sources close to the French Government expressed satisfaction at the result of the conference. They said it showed the wish of all to settle the canal dispute by peaceful' means. Rome: Italian political quarters con sidered that the London conference has achieved a positive result. They regard the majority plan, backed by Italy, as an elastic formula capable of ultimately gaining Egyptian acceptance in later negotiations. Bonn: West German Government [officials expressed relief that the conference has' at least agreed to continue the path of negotiations Saudi Arabia’s Attitude WASHINGTON. August 22 The Saudi Arabian Embassy in Washington today denied knowledge of a reported decision by King Saud of Saudi Arabia to approach the United States government in Egypt’s favour on the Suez Canal issue. A high official said: “We know nothing about it.’’ Sheikh Abdullah al-Khayyal. the Saudi Arabian Ambassador, had as yet received no instructions to bring the matter to the State Department’s attention. Moreover. United States officials said that no such representations had so far been piade to the United Slates Embassy in Saudi ArabiaThe Egyptian Embassy in Paris said in a press statement today that King Saud had decided to send a warning to Washington about the status of oil supplies in the Persian Gulf if the situation should deteriorate between Egypt and the Arab nations on the one hand and the Western Powers on the other.
N.Z. Visit By Indian Health Minister
(Rec. 9 p.m.) CANBERRA. Aug. 24 India’s Minister of Health (the Rajumari Amrik Kauri will visit Australia and New Zealand in October, the acting Minister of External Affairs (Sir Philip Mcßride) announced today.
Sir Philip Mcßride said the Rai kumari was one of the most dislin guished women in Indian public life
She will arrive in Australia on October 1 and will spend some days in Sydney before going to New Zealand. She will later visit Melbourne and Canberra. She will be accompanied by the secretary of the Indian Council of Medical Research (Dr. G. C Pandit).
