PROCEDURE AT INQUESTS
AUCKLAND CORONER’S ATTITUDE OFFICIAL INSTRUCTIONS AWAITED (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. August 24. Mr A. Addison, the Auckland Coroner. has not concluded any inquests since he announced more than a week ago that he was awaiting instructions on inquest procedure from the Justice Department. A fortnight ago. Mr Justice Shorland. in a judgment concerning the finding of the Wellsford Coroner, condemned the practice of coroners accepting as evidence witnesses’ statements taken previously by the police. Since then, only three inquests awaiting conclusion have been Mr Addison’s concern. Today he reaffirmed that he was not prepared to coiwlude them until he had a reply to his request to the Justice Department for instructions. “I am sticking to my guns in the meantime,” said Mr Addison. “I do not believe that there has been any miscarriage of justice in my Court through the use of more expedient methods." Mr Addison said that, under the procedure exemplified by Mr Justice Shorland in the Supreme Court, it might take a whole day to hear a straight-forward inquest. Even in such a case, he claimed, the ends of justice would not be better served.
