More encouragement for Maori students to undertake university euu cation was advocated by Dr. ’ D E Hansen at the annual meeting of the Senate of the University of New Zealand in Wellington yesterday. He suggested that one of the Taranaki Scholarships awarded annually should be reserved for a Maori student. Dr Hansen said that, although the same facilities in university education were offered both Maori and pakena, Maoris did not have the same ability to take advantage of the opportunities. The Senate’s executive committee was asked to discuss Dr. Han sen’s suggestion with the Minister ol Education (Mr R. M. Algie), and to report to the Senate.—(FJL)
