HUGE DAM IN AUSTRALIA

WORK BEGINS ON TUMUT PROJECT (From a Reuter Corresoovdent) SYDNEY. Work has begun on the foundations of a 290 ft high dam. the largest in the southern hemisphere, at Tumut Pond in Australia’s Snowy Mountains. The American contracting group. Kaiser - Walsh - Perini - Raymond, is building the dam. The Tumut river has been diverted through a 24ft tunnel, 200 ft long. Engineers expect concrete work on the dam, which is to hold more than eight times the amount of water in Sydney Harbour, to begin in December. The contract, for more than £25.000.000 is the biggest let in Australia.
