SUEZ CANAL
Sir,—With the world still halfcrazed through wallowing in great clots of human blood in two world wars, a few gutless anonymous readers deny the right to bluntly criticise the preparations for yet another bloodbath for loot. The greatest storyteller of them all is alleged to have referred to his compatriots as “a generation of vipers.” Was this bitter? Anyone, especially those in authority, who refuses, through moral cowardice or economic pressure, to stand on the side of the people when they are threatened with extermination. carries the stink of the viper, and, if “Prince of Peace” followers, they smell even worse. The past persecution of courageous, noble Christian pacifist clerics, if perpetuated this time, will lead during or after the holocaust, to the restraint (if nothing better) of the persecutors themselves. Suez and all other international disputes must be settled by negotiation. No extermination without retribution.—Yours, etc., MELVILLE B. MITCHELL. August 21, 1956.
