LEPTOSPIROSIS CASE
NOTIFIABLE DISEASES LIST One case of leptospirosis in the Greymouth district is art Song the infectious diseases notified for the week ended August 18, according to the TT St ~}s sued by the Department of Health. Not a common disease, leptopspirosis first became notifiable in New Zealand about 1952. The disease is regarded as an occupational one for all persons engaged in livestock farming, veterinarians, butchers and abattoir workers. The symptoms are similar to those of influenza or meningitis. In 1954, there were only 60 cases of the disease notified in the whole country. Most of them were in the Waikato and New Plymouth health districts. Six cases of diseases were notified in the Christchurch district, three cases of pemphigus neonatorum ano impetigo, staphylococcus skin diseases, one case of infective hepatitis, and two cases of tuberculosis. There was one death from tuberculosis. Other notifications in the Greymouth district were one case of infective hepatitis and one of tuberculosis.
