BAUXITE FIND IN QUEENSLAND

Huge Deposits Of Ore (Rec. 9 p.m.) CAIRNS (Northern Queensland), August 21. Huge deposits of bauxite, from which aluminium is obtained, have been found on the west Coast of the Cape York Peninsula, the far northern tip of Australia. Announcing the discovery today, the chairman of the Consolidated Zinc Corporation, Ltd., Mr L. B. Robinson, said experts should prove the quality of the ore by the end of the year. He said the known deposits were in an area of 2000 square miles near the Weipa Presbyterian Mission Station.' on the Gulf of Carpentaria. There were hundreds of millions of tons of bauxite, he said. Mr Robinson said the deposits would be worked by Exploration Enterprise, a subsidiary of Consolidated Zinc. “It is not possible to say much about the likely development of the field until its grade has been proved “However, there is no doubt that there is a lot of bauxite there. “We are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for the best.” In Brisbane today the chief State Government geologist (Mr A. K. Denmead) said a few samples of bauxite from Cape York Peninsula had been tested. It had been low in aluminium, but could not be regarded as a good sample.

Mr Denmead said it had long been known that there were other bauxite deposits in Queensland, much nearer to Brisbane. One was of 1,500,000 tons of the ore, proved and indicated, at Tamborine mountain, close to the State capital. Diana Dors Injured BEVERLY HILLS (California), August 20.
