A sharp increase in the number of students attending New Zealand uni- I versity colleges in the next five yeart I was forecast to the New Zealand University Senate today by the ViceChancellor (Dr. G. A. Currie). Serious demands on accommodation would result, he said. If methods of forecasting used were correct. a rise in the number of students would occur next year. Although the total number of students did not increase substantially this year throughout the university system, ’ there was an appreciable rise above the expected numbers at Canterbury University College, he said. The figure forecast for 1956 was 2275, but the number of students enrolled was 2407. The Chancellor (Sir David Smith) reported that students attending New Zealand universities this year totalled 4479 full-time and 4997 part-time.
