Nasser Repeats Policy

(Rec. 11 p.m.) CAIRO, August 18. President Nasser, in an interview today with Mr Tom Little, general manager of the Arab News Agency, reaffirmed that he would not in any circumstances accept international management of the Suez Canal Company as proposed by Mr Dulles at the London conference.

“It would be an infringement of our sovereignty and dignity, and I cannot consider it,” Colonel Nasser said. Colonel Nasser said the canal was part of Egyptian territory. “The question of security is not affected by nationalisation.” he said.

“If there was any foreign security before, it existed when British troops were on Egyptian soil, and when they went—and not when nationalisation took place—the question of security arose. “But, in fact, we were always responsible for security, and stopped Israeli ships from using the canal even when British troops were in Egypt,” he said.
