TRACK WORK AT WINGATUI
LANDON AND WINNING WAVE IMPRESS
TRIALS HELD ON COURSE PROPER “The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN. August 19. Training operations at Wingatui took on a brighter note yesterday morning, when the course proper was open for work for the first time since the June meeting. Track conditions had improved over the last few days, but the going was cutting out after the frost thawed. The trials were held on the extreme outside. t , Conditions did not permit any outstanding gallops, but Landon. Winning Wave, The Boss, and Post Card were responsible for attractive trials over half a mile. Landon (J. D. Pankhurst) and Winning Wave (R. Mackie) ran the opening furlong in 13sec, and finished strongly to complete.half a mile in 54 4-ssec. The Boss (G. A. Campbell) and Post Card (B. Blair), were clear of Arch Villain (R. Mackie) over the same ground in 55sec, the last three furlongs in 42 Armando (N. Hewitt) safely held Flying Field (L. W. Hare), Neptona (M. Houliston), and Salfaulter (E. Lowry) at the end of half a mile in 56 2-ssec, the opening furlong in 12 3-ssec. Armando failed in his one appearance at Riccarton, but the trip does not appear to have done him any harm. Flying Field is a half-sister by Cassock to Field Chief, and will make her first appearance in the Trial Stakes. Could Have Improved Silence (J. D. Pankhurst) ran the first three furlongs in 43sec, and could have improved on his time of Imin 27 2-ssec for six furlongs. Irish Wings (R- J- Skelton) was going well over five furlongs, and Cocos (R. Mackie) and Chief View (R. J. Bain) rounded off their gallop over nine furlongs by coming home the last three furlongs in 43 3-ssec. Master David, which made the grade as a staying hack at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting, carries a bright appearance, and looks particularly well. He was given a mile of pace work, and a similar task was alloted his stable-mate, Flying Doctor. Aberdeen (R. J. Bain) forced the pace over the early stages, but Galactic (E. Lowry) had the advantage at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 54sec. They were doing their best work over the early stages, running the opening half-mile m Horatius missed the Riccarton meeting because of slight injuries he received at Trentham, but Mr J. M. Samson’s Foxbridge five-year-old has fully recovered and is likely to be one of the; fancied candidates for the Tally Ho Handicap, the first leg of next Saturday’s double. He was accompanied by Sir Gerald over seven furlongs of sound pace work. Royal Mail (R.)J. Skelton), Royal Tattoo (B. J. Anderton), and Mitre Peak (H. T. Anderton) ran half a mile down the back straight, from the seven furlongs to the three in 54sec. The first two furlongs took 27 l-ssec. Royal Tattoo shows the benefit of her spell and should make the grade in hack company this season. Cassius (D. McLaren) and Wilshire (B. J. Anderton) completed a similar task in 55 2-ssec, the opening two furlongs in 27sec. Hurdling Recruit
Cassius is one of the latest recruits to hurdling, and the half-brother to Julius Caesar has taken to his new role in fine style. He will be given’ plenty of time and his appearance as a hurdler will be delayed until next jumping season. There was a big demand for the starting stalls at the mile barrier where two-year-olds and maiden gallopers were given starting practice. The Wanderer (B. P. Kennedy) appears to be well forward to commence his three-year-old racing. The Kurdistan gelding ran half a mile on the plough in 54sec, the opening furlong in 14sec. Lucky Dewar and Royal Pal completed their work by coming home the last three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. Gypsyway (S. J. Harrington) and Voca-
lize (D. Pankhurst) made light of their task over two flights qf hurdles at a sound pace. Gypsyway has not raced for some time, but has had a sound preparation for his first attempt over hurdles on Saturday. • , Stormtide (W. Dryden) got safely around five steeplechase fences, and gave a much improved display when he was allowed to increase his pace over the brush double.
King Charles (J. M. Surgenor) did not take his task over a round ’ of hurdles kindly, and his effort was not impressive.
