EYE INJURIES IN INDUSTRY
APATHY TOWARDS USE OF PROTECTION
A widespread apathy among workers in all industries toward the wearing of goggles has been noticed b” Mr H. B. Barker, field officer in Christchurch of the National Safety Association. In some of these industries, he said, the number of eye injuries was high. In many industries overseas, MiBarker said, the wearing of some form of eye protection had been made a condition of employment, which had had the result of markedly reducing the numbers of eye injuries. Several New Zealand firms had now adopted this policy and results to date had been most encouraging. “A decision to enforce the wearing of goggles in a plant calls for a certain amount of courage on the part of the management.” said Mr Barker. In many instances, the types of eye protection provided in New Zealand had not been the most suitable having due regard to the comfort of the operator, but there was now on the market a wide variety of different type of eye protection which were designed to afford protection against all types of eye injury. A careful study of the task to be undertaken bv the worker should, however, be carried out before a selection was made. The National Safety Association would be pleased to give advice and assistance in this respect, he said.
