MEDIATION BY IRAQ
Canal Dispute Talks (Rec. 11 p.m.) CAIRO. Aug. 17 An Iraqi Senator, Tawfin Suidi, is expected in Cairo from Bagdad todav amid reports that his visit may be linked with possible Iraq mediation between Egypt and the West over the Suez Canal dispute. Senator Suidi returned to Bagdad after leading Iran’s delegat m to last week-end s meeting on the Arab League nolitical committees, at which resolutions were massed backing Egypt and calling on the West to abandon ‘pressure »nd threats.”
In Bagdad last night, the Iraqi Ur.der-Secretary for Foreign Affairs said that the Egyptian Foregin Min-
ister. Dr. Fawzi, had officially asked Iraq to mediate in the dispute, making the request through Senator Suidi. In Ankara yesterday, the Turkish Prime Minister. Mr Menderes, received the Lebanese Ambassador for talks understod to be connected with a Lebanese reouest that Turkey should mediate in the dispute and “show understanding” towards the Egyptian viewpoint.

Syria, Lebanon. Tunisia Libva. end Pakistan. Egyptian citizens in Athens and Vienna held demonstrations, while others observed public periods of silence in Warsaw and Prague. Cairo was comoletelv blacked out last night as Egvntian planes flew over in a mock air raid. In Port Said, the War Minister, General Amer, inspected naval units and national guard training camps before flying to Alexandria. Attitude Of Egypt (Rec. 8 p.rp.) LONDON, Aug. 17 Wing Commander Sabry, President Nasser’s chief political adviser, called today on Mr V. K. Krishna Menon the Indian delegation leader at th< Suez Conference. Wing Commander Sabry arrived in London last night from Cairo. He immediately rejected the ’. ’est-j ern-sponsored plan. “Colonel Nasser would not have an independent authority for the canal.’’ he said. “We insist we shall have sole rights of control of the canal and its economy. If force is applied, wc shall defend ourselves.”
