ONE DEAD, NINE INJURED
Head-on Collision Between Cars DRIVERS SWERVE TO AVOID TRUCK (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH. August 17. An 18-year-old youth died in the Palmerston North Hospital, and nine other persons were admitted to the hospital after a head-on collision near the Mangaone bridge in Tremaine avenue. Palmerston North, tonight. The youth killed was: Ivan Smith, of 70 Cook street, Palmerston North.
It is reported that the accident occurred when a car driven by Mr H. J. Cohr. of Kairanga, and containing four passengers, swerved to avoid a truck being backed from a private driveway in Tremaine avenue.
The other car was driven by Mrs E. J. Buick, also of Kairanga. Mrs Buick had as passengers Ivan Smith and four children. She also endeavoured to swerve away from the backing truck. Both cars were fairly extensively damaged in the head-on collision. Those taken to hospital are: Mrs Elizabeth Cohr. aged about 50; fracture of the skull and severe lacerations. Hazel Cohr. aged 23; treated and discharged. Jillian Cohr, aged 20; slight concussion and shock. Olive James Cohr; injuries to right leg. Malcolm Richards, aged 3$ years, son of Mr and Mrs A. Richards, of Prince’s Hotel. Palmerston North; fracture of the skull and concussion. Gary Richards, aged six, brother ol Malcolm Richards; concussion. Brian Buick, aged nine; fracture of the jaw and concussion. Colin Buick, aged 10; concussion and severe lacerations. Herman Jense Cohr. aged 50; treated and discharged. Mrs Buick escaped injury.
FATAL ELECTRIC SHOCK GUNNER KILLED AT BURNHAM A 19-year-old military trainee was kiljed by an electric shock at Burnhatn Military Camp early yesterday afternoon. He was Gunner John Leslie Townsend, of Alexandra, Central Otago. Gunner Townsend suffered a 6000volt shock. He was an immigrant Horn England, and is believed to have had no relatives in New Zealand. MAN FALLS FROM MAST TOP SAILOR ON THE KAITAWA DIES AT GREYMOUTH (New Zealand Press Association) GREYMOUTH, August 17. A member of the crew of the collier Kaitawa was fatally injured when he fell from the top of the mast when the ship was preparing for sea at Greymouth this afternoon. He was: Geoffrey Bramfield Wary, of Remuera, Auckland. His next of kin is his father, who resides at 93 Lucern road. Remuera. The Kaitawa finished loading coal at Greymouth this morning, and was being prepared for sea when the accident occurred about 1.40 p.m. Wray was up the mast painting when he slipped and fell to the deck, receiving extensive injuries. He was given medical attention, and was taken to hospital, but died soon afterwards.
