AUSTRALIAN HOPE FOR MARATHON

For the second time in the last 12 months, Keith Ollerenshaw has broken Emil Zatopek's Olympic Games marathon record. Ollerenshaw won the New South Wales marathon championship at Botany, New South Wales, in the Australian record time of 2hr 21min 12sec. This clipped 66 seconds off his own record for the 26 miles 385 yards. The first four place-getters in the New South Wales championship beat the standard set for Australians to compete in the Olympic Games marathon. Bryce Mackay (2hr 23min 28sec>, John Russell (2hr 24min 44sec>, and John Pendleton <2hr 31min 37sec) are all possible team mates for Ollerenshaw at the Games. Ollerenshaw’s time beat by smin 3sec the winning time in the English marathon championship held three weeks ago. The best time ever recorded for a marathon is by the Finn, Antti Viskari, who, on the virtually down-hill course at Boston (U.S.A.), covered the distance in 2hr 14min 14sec. Marathon runners are inclined to disregard Viskari’s time and take Englishman Jim Peters’ time of 2hr 17min 5 sec as the best ever recorded under true marathon conditions. Since he commenced training for the Olympic marathon, Ollerenshaw has run 3000 miles in training.
