Noted Miler Injured

One of Australia’s Olympic hopes has suffered a severe setback in training. He is the mile runner, Merv Lincoln, who has an ankle injury which may keep him out of the 1500 metres at this year’s Olympic Games. Lincoln has run a mile in under 4min 3sec and is regarded as a likely third team member for the Olympic 1500 metres with John Landy and Jim Bailey. Lincoln was wearing a new pair of spiked shoes while training in Melbourne three weeks ago and he tore tendons in his left ankle. He will not run again for at least another month and this could seriously affect his form for the Olympic trials in October. Lincoln is being coached by Franz Stampfl who helped Roger Bannister and Chris Chataway train in England before settling in Australia 18 months ago.
